Are you ready to take your hooping to the stage? Performing can be intimidating and nerve racking for even the most experienced hooper but with the right tools and preparation you can walk on stage comfortably and confidently for every performance. As we grow as hoopers and are presented with the opportunity to display and perform this beautiful art form to the general public we want to share with the audience just how incredible this movement really is. This workshop will introduce you to a number of different elements of performance. We'll talk about performing for kids, choreographing a set, becoming vocal on stage, audience participation, roving/go-go style shows vs. stage shows. Best of all I'll show you a basic outline of how to create a full HALF HOUR solo stage show that can be performed at festivals, staff parties and other corporate events. This class will be an investment for yourself and your career as a hoop dance performer!
In this hoop journey we will amplify our sensual awareness including sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste and extra-sensory perception. Individual and group exercises with props will cultivate presence and accelerate responsiveness. Tap into divine feminine qualities such as softening, opening, chaos, desire, trust, and reception with guided activities. You will leave with a big smile... and greater agility, precision and flow.
Isolation I
Come play and explore the art of off-body hoop manipulation! Learn from Matt and Brian of Circus Conspiracy how to integrate concepts of isolation, antispin, to create compelling illusions of floating and gliding. Impress your friends, confuse your cat, be the talk of any circus-jam--you'll get it all with this workshop! This class contains beginning and intermediate isolation concepts suitable for any size hoop and any style hooper.
Isolation I
A continuation of Isolation I, this workshop jumps right in with advanced one-hoop isolation moves and sequences. Then, we add a second hoop and learn some two hoop isolation concepts and patterns. This class contains intermediate and advanced isolations and is meant for hoopers with two small hoops interested in isolations and comfortable with the basics.
In this workshop we will explore ways of moving throughout the hoop, in the space in between our more dynamic movements. We will start building combinations and will learn to add style and stage presence in moves that would otherwise seem less exciting. We will combine tricks, transitions and attitude, bringing out the performer that exists within each of us. Express yourself with confidence, and watch that spill over onto your audience!
ROUE CYR
In this class we will be introducing participants to the basic techniques of the Roue Cyr, or Cyr Wheel. The wheel, essentially a 6-foot tall metal hoop, is a new circus prop that has exploded onto the circus scene in recent years. Portable, fun, and a great workout, the wheel allows for infinite possibilities in terms of dance, manipulation, and acrobatics. Sam Tribble and David Poznanter of "Spinnovation" will demonstrate and teach basic movements and manipulation as we explore this exciting new prop together.
MINI ROUE CYR ("FLOORING")
The Mini Roue Cyr is a 3-foot tall, extremely strong metal hoop designed for "flooring:" spinning within and upon the wheel, and a variety of sorts of manipulation. A completely new and innovative circus prop, the Mini Roue Cyr is currently only performed professionally by a few artists around the world. In this workshop we will teach basic techniques, as well as introduce exercises for movement research, manipulation, and improvisation.
MOVEMENT FOR MANIPULATORS
Focusing on the relationship between the body and object(s), we will explore ways to develop new movement material, as well as ways to spark more creative and expressive improvisation. Based largely on my work integrating juggling and dance with choreographers at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance and around Europe, this class encourages breaking away from traditional "trick" based thinking and moving toward a richer, deeper range of expression and virtuosic movement.

KiT~ will show you how to work your original style, and focus on moves that enhances YOUR hoop dance, look and grace. How to interact and connect with your audience and fun music mishaps and wardrobe malfunctions. She'll EVEN show you how to make love to the camera. Please bring a notepad and a pen, small mirror and a personal flair that defines your hoopersonality.
Symbol, natural movement, pattern, pathway, pulse of flow….
Hooping is about the pulsation of relationship with the Circle, and presence to that conversation. If we come to it with intelligence, intention, and awareness, we can turn our hoopdance into a holistic practice that engages body, mind, heart, and spirit. .
In this session, we will take somatic circularity inside, to enjoy playful and effective hoop cross-training with drills and warm-ups you can use in your own practice, inspired by other movement modalities that follow circular patterns. The aim is to cultivate stability, strength, flexibility, and balanced action in all the right places, cultivate somatic awareness, creativity, and intelligence of initiation, gravity, momentum, and flow. (Specific influences include modern floorwork, pulsation yoga, bellydance, and capoeira.)
As we enter into our dance with the hoop, we will explore pathways and patterns of the Circle in space with off-body tracing, the play of initiation, allowing, and axis through plane-changing transitions between on- & off- body movements, and find at the heart of our sadhana a devotion to refinement of our relationship to ‘flow,’ seamless union of sustained motion of hoop and dancer.
You will come away with a template for a well-rounded personal practice, technical tips & drills that will open doors of creative potential, and a greater connection to the power, meaning, and unity of the Circle. Please bring a comfortable on-body hoop, and a lighter off-body hoop if you have them!

Revolva - Totally Vaudeville: Hooping as a Variety Art
What’s the difference between "flow" and "punctuation" in a hoop routine? Is it possible to incorporate other props (like top hats and toy guns) while hooping? If you’re laughing and giggling during your own joyful practice, why not harness all that fun and convey it to onlookers? This workshop may help experienced performers approach their acts in a new way – and will offer non-performers a chance to play and create. Let’s get ridiculous!

Hoopnotica - Isolate the Rib Cage and Expand your Hoop Practice - A Journey into Chest and Shoulder Hooping
New and Experienced Hoopers eventually face the challenge of learning and refining Chest and Shoulder Hooping. Hooping on the upper body opens you to a dynamic and liberating expression of movement and joy. It opens the heart, relieves discomfort in the upper back and increases mobility of the spine. However, many hoopers feel stuck and experience obstacles when learning how to isolate this motion segment - the ribcage and upper torso. They also discover "cheats" which give the illusion of isolation but encourage repetitive use injuries and misalignment. Jocelyn Gordon, Hoopnotica Teacher Trainer, Yoga Therapist and Movement Educator, will lead you through an interactive warm-up, hands-on practice and Hoopnotica skill building session that will improve your range of motion expand your hoop practice.
Khan Wong - Composition & Space in Group Choreography
This workshop will explore use of space, stage composition, and complexity of patterns in group choreography. We'll also look at how these physical elements can be used in the service of narrative or the theme of a performance. Rebecca - Get Grounded: Play with Elevation Changes and Floor Work
Roll, bounce, slide, lunge and then throw your head back and giggle! Diversify your hooping style through the integration of level changes and floor work into your repertoire. Floor work is exciting and dynamic! It increases balance, strength, co-ordination and flexibility. In this workshop we will explore level changes, transitions from standing into the floor, entry level acrobatics, and the importance of weight transfer.
Explore the cross-over between poi and hand hooping or just learn another flow tool for the fun of it! Poi flow inspires new styles of hoop movement and will expand your doubles and double minis repertoire. This is a great introduction to poi concepts such as turns, weaves and flowers for those who struggled with new hand hooping techniques last year. In addition to fun tricks we will look at our spiral planes - some poi and hoop tricks are lost on an audience if you are standing on the wrong angle. Let's explore this and improve your performance technique.
Wanting to expand your hoop performance or double your meditative spinning bliss? Strengthen, deepen and balance your hoop practice by using two hoops simultaneously. Malcolm Stuart - Discovering, Isolating, and Playing with Hoop Movement
In my class I will do my best to impart my methods of discovering, isolating, and playing with hoop movement. This will involve working with your existing vocabulary, while exploring the benefits of relinquishing control of it. We will toy with the edge of the comfortable known, and cross into the scary realm of (god forbid!) maybe looking stupid. He, he, he.
There is immense knowledge in our bodies that doesn’t require our conscious help to exist. I am referring to that magical wellspring of information that is within us all. Its how we don’t have to think about dividing our cells, or beating our heart. Often when we let our rational mind step out of the way, access to this inner knowing can be greatly enhanced. The rational intellect is great for many things, like practicing and developing a skill, but there are times where we need to let the activity fall from us effortlessly with the intellect uninvolved. For instance when we are thinking about how things could go wrong, or what others will think, we are blocking ourselves from ourselves! So in my class we will cultivate our inner flailing child. I will offer this license to flail precisely in order to remove this inner dialogue.
We all know what its like to be learning a new hoop move or anything at all for that matter. At first we have to think it every step of the way. We are stilted and it’s frustrating. Then that wonderful moment arrives when the thinking can stop and the learned task flows from us naturally. I’ve heard it said that learning is manufacturing instinct. It’s taking an activity that feels unnatural and making it natural. In my class we will explore the benefits of both sides of this equation, the rational thinking side, and the letting go side, in relation to developing our own individual hoop movement vocabularies.
Rather than teaching any particular style, trick or set of tricks, my intention for this class is to leave you with a greater sense of your own ability to invent hoop movement, and to isolate it enough to add it to your repertoire.
In this class, we will open to the deepest channels to discover new space and freedom in our core hooping. When we hoop on the core, we connect to our most fundamental and irreducible rhythm--the prime mover of energy and flow. The touch of the hoop on the core has the potential to take us deeply Within, while the hoop's motion around the core reaches beyond the confines of the body into the potent energetic space that surrounds us. Often, after we get through our first agonizing hours of flight time, the complexity and richness of simple waist hooping is breezed past in the hurry to acquire moves. But the very soul of our dance is delivered through the core.
Please bring a blindfold and a hoop that is very comfortable for core hooping.
Rainbow Michael - Explore the world of isolation, linear isolation, linear extension with mini hoops
In this class Rainbow Michael helps you explore the world of isolation, linear isolation, linear extension with the mini hoops and a variety of movements that build a comprehensive knowledge base as well as make you feel like a geometric super hero. Make your hoop feel like it is floating, gliding and flying right where you want it to, A great class for learning a off body hoop language and having fun doing it. We will then apply the movements to the Mini hoops to merge the left and right brain.
Hoop Technique is a theory-based system for approaching hoop dance that is intended to promote creative new ways of moving with, and thinking about, your hoop expression. A fundamental principle underlying Hoop Technique springs from a shared passion to further legitimize modern hoop dance as a respected form of artistic expression. Developed and co-taught by Rich Porter and Spiral, this workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the 4 primary concepts of Hoop Technique: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. Exercises, skill instruction, theoretical discussion, and points of creative consideration relating to these four guiding concepts will provide a framework for personal expression and add depth and dimension to your movement. Hoop Technique also utilizes a literal, descriptive language when communicating about hoop dance to more easily facilitate teaching, choreography and general discussion throughout the hoop community.

Brecken - Spinning and Settling- Gettin' Wavy
In this class we’ll explore the nuance of off-body transitional space via the natural momentum and balance of our bodies and the hoop. Rather than rushing from one plane to the next, I want to delve headlong into what’s occurring within that space, taking into account the natural swing found in our arms, legs and entire bodies, allowing that momentum to locate the transitional path as it unfolds and allowing that path to dictate even further momentum –overall a nice cycle for off-body flow. I think hooping is at the point that we can utilize that subtlety toward taking it further: applying swing and watching the hoop's (and our own) natural inclination as that momentum settles.
I've found this "wave current" and I have a good number of techniques for initiating this momentum. Be prepared to spin and rock out in this workshop.
