Deconstructing Your Hooping Experience
Step into your hoop portal and spin back in time as we roll through the history of the modern hooping movement to a place where hooping can become truly our own unique and special creation. We’ll examine ideas, beliefs, so called rules and assumptions about hooping and how they may or may not relate to us. Then we’ll spin away energies and layers that aren’t working for a more authentic and joy filled hooping experience.
Chest and Shoulder Hooping: For Beginners & Beyond
Ask many hoopers what their nemesis move is these days and many will say it is chest and shoulder hooping. It’s a powerful heart chakra opening rotation that many are struggling with. Bring your largest hoop to class and we’ll create a safe space to collectively unlock the secrets of upper on the body hoop flow, all before we take it next level with a couple fun chest and shoulder hooping tricks.
Courtney Fagras (FB, @mushooproom & YouTube) is a hoop explorer and innovator from the Pacific Northwest. A hoop artist quite possibly of alien descent, Courtney has taught and performed at festivals all over the west coast and beyond. The winner of Hooping Idol season 5, Courtney is known for her wacky stage presence, and inventive style and she continues to push the envelope of hoop dance.
We will be exploring three hoop modalities that can be easily integrated into your flow to create new and innovative tricks. The modalities in this workshop include backspin, folds and coin-flips. I will teach tricks varying from beginner to advanced that utilize these methods, so there is something for everyone. This class is about giving you new concepts to grow your flow instead of just being entirely trick based.
Character Work with Hooping
In this class we will access different characters within ourselves and learn to integrate those characters into your hoop manipulation to create richer and more dynamic performances. This workshop may get silly, sultry, dramatic, or sad, so bring your imagination and lets bring your stage presence to the next level!
Kenya Flowrescente (FB, YouTube & @flowrescentekenya) is coming to us from Puebla, Mexico. She fell in love with the power of the circle after finding a way to express herself, feeling her spirit rise. Today she’s known for her hula hoop skills with balance, manipulation, multi-hooping, isolations and flow. As an attendee at Hoopcamp 2014, her performance blew everyone away and we’re excited to have her back this year to share her mad skills. Savannah HoopStar (FB & @savannahhoopstar_101) comes to us from Boulder, Colorado, USA. She may only be 11-years-old, but she’s been hooping for 4 years and has taken the hoop world by storm! Our Youth Hooper of the Year award winner and the first youth instructor ever to be teaching at Hoopcamp, Savannah has developed some unique talents that are sure to inspire hoopers of all ages. With two years of modern hoop dance under her belt, Savannah began taking rhythmic gymnastic classes and has found some impressive ways to combine the two, fusing rhythmic gymnastics moves into her hoop dance flow. She loves to perform at festivals, talent shows, competitions, and has been in several cirque shows.
Rhythmic Gymnastics Inspired Hoop Dance
We will start with working on some stretching to get the muscles warmed up and work on our flexibility. Then we will be learning illusions and leaps, as well as working on our posture, hand and foot placement to add elegance to our flow. We will also be covering some of my favorite ways to bridge rhythmic gymnastics and hoop dance such as hooping on one foot gracefully, palm spins, cartwheels and transitions. For those that aren’t comfortable doing cartwheels, we will have other things we can work on instead. While more of an advanced class, it can accommodate any skill level too and the entire workshop will be done with a single hoop. Can’t wait to see you there!
