Baxter (Website, FB, YouTube & @hooppatherbaxter) has been hooping since 2001. In 2004, he was featured in The Hooping Life documentary. At home in North Carolina, Baxter began teaching a local hoop class in 2005. From those weekly classes, he developed a hoop dance curriculum called “The HoopPath”. Since 2006 The HoopPath way of hoop dance has been taught all over the US, Canada, the UK, and some parts of Europe. In addition to his traveling teaching, Baxter threw his own national hoop dance retreat in North Carolina every June for 10 years. The HoopPath curriculum emphasizes and encourages self-exploration and self-expression combined with full body awareness and movement.
After 12 years of teaching hoop dance as a career, Baxter is retiring from being a traveling hoop teacher so we’re super excited to have him with us at Hoopcamp this year. Although, he will still be hooping everyday and teaching locally, Baxter plans to pursue other artistic and career interests after this year and to spend more time at home.
The Big Spin In
I am so honored to say that this will be my 8th time opening Hoop Camp! Long ago, we realized that a great way to bring everyone together on the same vibe was to have an opening in which everyone could hoop together. For this year’s Opening, I’ll lead us through some of my favorite HoopPath exercises and concepts for helping people find their confidence and authenticity. I’ll loosely guide you as you get your groove on to fresh music across many different genres too. This will be fun!
Remember those amazing LED Hooper Night Hikes of Hoopcamp’s past? We all gathered together with our LED hoops shining brightly in the night and followed Merlin through the forest to the beautiful stupas at our old location, Pema Osel Ling. This year the LED Hooper Night Hike returns and our good friends at Astral Hoops will be leading the way. We’ll be making our way over the river and through the woods at Camp Campbell up to The Wishing Tree where we’ll be spinning up something magical together. If you haven’t experienced the night hike before this video from the one in 2010 will give you a pretty good idea.
Alright hoopers, get in formation! In this workshop, you will learn a fun and sassy single-hoop Hoopography sequence. Getting in sync with your hoop & friends is easy using 8-counts and dancing to your favorite pop-hits. All levels of hoopers and dancers are encouraged to attend!
Lock It Like It’s Hot
Hoop locking is a fun and snappy way to add hands-free punctuation to your doubles flow! In this workshop, I will give you the keys to the basic lock and we will explore dynamic lock entrances and exits. No prior doubles experience necessary. Get ready to unlock your new favorite hoop moves!

Deconstructing Your Hooping Experience
Step into your hoop portal and spin back in time as we roll through the history of the modern hooping movement to a place where hooping can become truly our own unique and special creation. We’ll examine ideas, beliefs, so called rules and assumptions about hooping and how they may or may not relate to us. Then we’ll spin away energies and layers that aren’t working for a more authentic and joy filled hooping experience.
Chest and Shoulder Hooping: For Beginners & Beyond
Ask many hoopers what their nemesis move is these days and many will say it is chest and shoulder hooping. It’s a powerful heart chakra opening rotation that many are struggling with. Bring your largest hoop to class and we’ll create a safe space to collectively unlock the secrets of upper on the body hoop flow, all before we take it next level with a couple fun chest and shoulder hooping tricks.
Courtney Fagras (FB, @mushooproom & YouTube) is a hoop explorer and innovator from the Pacific Northwest. A hoop artist quite possibly of alien descent, Courtney has taught and performed at festivals all over the west coast and beyond. The winner of Hooping Idol season 5, Courtney is known for her wacky stage presence, and inventive style and she continues to push the envelope of hoop dance.
We will be exploring three hoop modalities that can be easily integrated into your flow to create new and innovative tricks. The modalities in this workshop include backspin, folds and coin-flips. I will teach tricks varying from beginner to advanced that utilize these methods, so there is something for everyone. This class is about giving you new concepts to grow your flow instead of just being entirely trick based.
Character Work with Hooping
In this class we will access different characters within ourselves and learn to integrate those characters into your hoop manipulation to create richer and more dynamic performances. This workshop may get silly, sultry, dramatic, or sad, so bring your imagination and lets bring your stage presence to the next level!
